This was awesome simply the style it is. I used a quick cooking barley, then I didn't add together that till the final 60 minutes when I added the mushrooms. Going to endeavor it with some cerise vino in it next time. It is of import to use beef STOCK and non broth. They are not the same...

A BIG WINNER (with a few tweaks...) and crockpot friendly too. To brand this recipe a true soup (instead of a stew) I utilize simply one lb of beef and 4 oz of barley. I also add ii cans of beef consomme and two Tbsp Worchester Sauce, both of which give the broth some extra ooomph! Throw everything EXCEPT the barley, into a crockpot for about 6 hrs. Add the barley nearly 1hr before serving. Easy! A note to new cooks: Taking the time to brown the meat & veg in a skillet is the key to developing flavour base of operations for most every soup or stew. It takes a few more minutes & dirties another dish Simply your taste buds will thank you!

this is the best beef stew I've institute (since our old family archetype). I left out the mushrooms, just because I forgot to buy some fresh... I did add a fiddling dash of kitchen boutonniere, and added more carrots/celery. Two thumbs upwardly!
06/26/2012
I didn't have mushrooms so left them out. Just otherwise flavor was slap-up! It didn't take 3 hours to cook...I cooked barley only 1 hour and it was definitely enough fourth dimension for the whole soup.
09/25/2012
Loved this! Took a tip from a beef stew recipe and added a Tbl each of steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce and ketchup/or barbeque sauce, every bit well as about 1/2 cup red wine and some garlic pulverisation as it started to simmer. Information technology does cook down and I ordinarily will add another cup or ii of broth around the fourth dimension I add the mushrooms

Loved, loved, loved!!! Awesome recipe! Delicious and filling. I accept had many requests for the recipe!! Highly recommend!!

I wish I had access to beef stock because I thought this was just ok while my hubby thought it was swell. I'm sure the other reviewer is right - the stock probably makes all the difference. I had to use beef broth. I threw this all into my slowcooker afterwards browning since I wanted the beef really tender. Cooked it on loftier for 2 hours and ii for low, it probably could have gone iv hours on loftier. Threw the barley in for the last hour and the mushrooms/veggies in the last half hour.

Ok, I made this soup/stew yesterday. I followed the ingredient listing well-nigh exactly, with the following changes. 1. I used more beef, because that was what came in the parcel. 2. and less onion. It is wonderful! I did notice the cooking time to be longer than needed. I cooked mine for xi/2 hrs. at a simmer and all my veggies and barley were cooked, I simply cooked the mushrooms for xxx mins. earlier serving. I too had to add together more liquid (31/ii cups of h2o) This is a delicious soup, and does get better the next mean solar day. I'll definetly make this once again.
09/29/2014
This was really practiced and piece of cake! My few notes: * I used beefiness bouillon and not stock and it was fine, and I didn't experience information technology needed any added salt. * I used virtually ane.25 lbs of stew meat, and it still had meat in every bite. * Added a dash of Worcestershire sauce as others have recommended. * Added frozen peas. Next time I recall I volition add more veggies because I like a lot of veggies in my soups. * Merely used iii/4 loving cup of barley, added when soup was boiling, and did cook the full three hours. Will definitely make this over again!

I loved this recipe. It is like shooting fish in a barrel to prepare, uses easily accessible ingredients & isn't 'finicky.' I did make a couple of *very pocket-size* changes (i.e., added i boosted stem of celery & 1 additional carrot, for a full of four each, & only used i onion, as that was all I had on manus). Other than that I fabricated it exactly as written. Note: salve yourself some $$ - don't purchase pre-cutting "stew meat"; instead purchase the aforementioned amount of chuck, and cut it yourself. You'll save a couple of dollars at to the lowest degree, & information technology's easier to cutting to the size y'all prefer - especially if you put it in the freezer for an hour before you cutting it. Oh, yes, one other minor change: I tasted the broth when adding the mushrooms and found information technology not quite "bulky" enough to suit me, so I added 1 beef bouillon cube. But that could easily but exist me. I'one thousand sure it would take been simply every bit adept without it. I do recommend tasting it at that time, though, as neither salt nor pepper are included in the ingredients(likely due to the beef stock). This is a very filling dish which refrigerates/reheats easily. I was going to see how it did with freezing, but I honestly don't have enough left to freeze and test. Information technology would make a lovely meal served with a green salad, crusty French bread & a overnice red wine. I volition well-nigh definitely exist making this lovely soup again, and shortly!

FYI—8 oz. of barley equals 1 cup. This isn't really a soup; more like a "hearty stew" that'due south perfect for a cold winter twenty-four hours. I'grand not sure you lot need to melt it for 3hrs. The long melt time turns the barely and vegetables into mush. Also, the barely absorbs the liquid so yous have to continually add water to prevent sticking and that only dilutes the flavour. I actually liked the flavor better before calculation the mushrooms and constitute the terminate product required a lot of salt and pepper.

I basically followed the recipe regarding the ingredients. I had some leftover salary from breakfast, so I threw that in along with garlic. (major garlic-lovers) I rarely measure annihilation and this was no exception... but I recollect I came pretty shut! Just succulent! What a great basic recipe that yous can add together to or Not! Thank you for this like shooting fish in a barrel satisfying recipe Wendellian. Whats actually heady to me is that I'll recall information technology without having to look it upwards! UPDATE-I've made this soup as well many times to count and I've recently started adding some Merlot vino to information technology. I always brand plenty to freeze so I won't accept to cook after working all 24-hour interval. My husband recently commented, "honey... you make really cracking soups but this one is a masterpiece! Again, I cheers Wendellian for sharing this killer recipe. I'm making information technology again today!
09/27/2014
This has an fantabulous flavor (I just tried it and had to write)! A couple notes: This was billed every bit a soup and I didn't expect information technology to be and so thick; much of the liquid got soaked up past the barley during the simmer. I also added some table salt & pepper - thought it was a little bland without and I may toss in a bay leaf next time. The grocery store simply had 1 lb. of stew meat then I used chop suey meat for the rest and information technology worked not bad - all the meat turned out very tender. I volition definitely go far again.
03/01/2014
This is a cracking recipe! More than like a "stoup" as Rachael Ray would say. Passing forth a hint to those who would like a "clearer" broth. Cook your barley separately co-ordinate to parcel directions in beef stock. Personally, I couldn't care less about the cloudiness.
12/30/2012
take made several times; have successfully added generous amounts of ground blackness pepper, a little parsley, a few bay leaves, and a small flake of Worcester sauce to bump upward the flavor in this great soup.
03/01/2014
I've been making this soup for years! It''s a definite keeper in our family! Add 1 peeled and diced Turnip to this for an unforgettable difference! If nosotros want it soup, I pre cook the barley and add to soup at stop. If stew, don't pre melt! If you want a really great gustatory modality, use beef tenderloin. Soooooo yummy!
03/02/2014
I have made this recipe most 4 times now, and information technology is a winner! I have made information technology with quick- cooking barley added at the last hr as some other reviewer suggested, and besides with regular barley according to the original recipe. Both ways are smashing, so don't be afraid to brand information technology with either method. If using the regular barley you might desire to accept extra beef stock on paw to add together equally it tends to exist a thicker consistency. Delicious and wholesome and filling!
02/23/2013
The only variations I did was to apply 1 package of Lipton Onion soup mix because I only had 4 cups of beef stock (I used boullion cubes). I too sauteed the mushrooms before adding at the end. Information technology was a fabled dinner for a cold night. Would be swell someday though.
11/26/2014
Very tasty! I used 8 cups of bootleg beef broth and added a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, per other's suggestions. I used pre cooked roast beef and that saved about 2 hours off the cooking time. It cooked upward just the way my married man and I like our soups, on the thicker side. It was still "soupy" because I used the extra cup of goop and kept the chapeau on while simmering.
02/25/2017
I rarely (never) rate food recipes, just this was so good that I had to say something. Similar others, I added a few extras: one TBL soy sauce, 1 TBL Worcester, and ane/2 cup ruby vino. The result was a delicious thick soup, more similar stew with yummy gravy. This will definitely become a regular on our family carte.
01/17/2014
Swell soup/stew! I used leftover cooked roast and dehydrated mushrooms. I followed a reviewer's recommendation and added 1T. Worcestershire sauce. The kids even thought it was tasty. I will definitely be making this over again!
12/25/2012
Excellent. My whole family unit, including two toddlers, loved this! The mushrooms made this (IMHO), and I was agape that the barley would get also mushy, merely it was perfect! It also reheated nicely.
05/31/2017
I browned garlic with the beefiness and peppered the beefiness and veggies when I cooked them. I was disappointed considering it was very bland. I'll definitely make this again - merely will be adding some more seasonings. Thyme and bay leaf maybe.
01/26/2017
We loved this stew! I made it true to the recipe with a nuance of Worcestershre and ketchup and added additional water to thin it out towards the end. Ane loving cup plus... Be sure to simmer with a covered pot.
03/04/2014
I made the recipe as given. I will make this once again, but using half the amount of barley and season the soup with salt and pepper. I thought it was very bland. All the barley soaked upwardly the juices. It's a very hearty soup which is skilful.
04/01/2017
The recipe was easy to make and a crowd pleaser. I took a pot to piece of work every bit a treat and everyone idea it was wonderful. I may have used a little actress beef. Mesomorphic beef chunks and the portabella mushrooms it made a hardy meal.
08/26/2014
My hubby said He Liked it! That was all I needed to hear. This was delicious! I added worchestershire and soy sauce as well as a tsp of smoked paprika, salt & pepper and garlic. I also used stale mushrooms. Tin't wait to have it for dinner this evening since others say information technology gets improve every bit it ages. Thanks for a keeper.
01/08/2017
It came out actually good. I took the suggestions from some of the other reviews and added some blood-red wine perchance a quarter cup, 2 Bay leaves and some Worchester sauce, thyme and minced garlic. It'south non as practiced as my grandmothers, simply a very skilful substitution. Will make again. I used beef stock and non beef goop but still don't know the divergence. ??
12/fifteen/2014
This was my first fourth dimension really making any soup. The recipe makes a lot. Information technology easily fed three adults...twice. :-). It probably would serve 12. It doesn't have 3 hrs. I started the pearled barley while I prepped and cooked the beef and vegetables. I chose to as well add 4 cloves of garlic and used a mix of baby Bellas and porcini mushrooms. By the fourth dimension I had mixed everything in the pot, the barley was set to add. All in all information technology took about an hr and 15 minutes. Not bad soup. Added salt and blackness pepper forth with onion powder. Become past your sense of taste. Information technology actually was much ameliorate with grated Parmesan.
01/xx/2015
This was a huge hit. I added Worcestershire sauce, garlic, thyme, balsamic vinegar, bay leaf, and oregano. The barley I cooked separately (substituting stock for water), and added for the last hour of cooking. We practice not like ours thick.
12/30/2012
Great. I used left overs from a rib roast for the beef and it came out terrific. A little salt and pepper with the veggies helps, too.
02/07/2013
Great!
11/25/2019
added red wine and woestschire.
11/09/2017
Very, very, adept! Super easy and keen on a chilly dark! The only thing I found is that it needs a bit of salt. I did salt and pepper the beef when I was browning information technology, but it wasn't enough. My beef broth was reduced sodium, so I'grand sure that is why. But it was easily prepare by adding a little milkshake of table salt to my bowl of soup. Didn't need much! Make this soup!
10/xxx/2019
This is a wintertime staple in my dwelling and anybody loves information technology!! Of course, I added a few things.. Fresh chopped garlic is corking because everything tastes better with garlic.. Worcester Sauce and Tamari ( or low sodium soy sauce) Merely a splash of both.. Cooking sherry and Bermuda sherry pepper sauce to add a pocket-sized kick!! Bay leaves, thyme and parsley.. It's cooking now and I'grand in the other room salivating!! I oft change things up as I melt.. Sometimes I add a little cream but this fourth dimension I had a small parcel of truffle powder.. If you lot have some and beloved mushrooms, this is the way to get!!
07/28/2015
Fantabulous! Hearty and filling!
05/28/2014
This soup was dandy, tasty and filling. Doubled the mushrooms and next time I'll add more than carrots. I used quick cooking barley because that's all I had and i added it in the last hour along with the mushrooms.
11/06/2014
excellent
06/21/2017
It was excellent!! I just made another pot and put it in the freezer. I did add a little more than goop as my married man likes it more soup like - merely it's still skilful.
01/01/2017
Excellent soup!!! I had leftover prime rib and used information technology instead of stew meat. I used 8 C broth, couldn't see having a half cup leftover (2 cartons). I didn't cook the prime rib, only sauteed the veggies then added about 2t. minced garlic and cooked another minute or 2. And then I added the mushrooms and in one case they started thursday release their juice I added the broth, some rosemary, salt and pepper. I used sodium free broth. Then added the barley, brought it to a boil, added the meat; reduced heat to a simmer, covered and permit information technology get for about 45 min. Hubs kept telling me how skillful it smelled as I cooked. Glad information technology makes lots! Volition definitely be making this again!
12/14/2019
I added a tablespoon of Tuscan Dusk, Paprika Smoked Castilian Style, Ground Cumin, 2 bay leaves, salt and pepper.. The finished product is thick, hearty and very tasty.
12/02/2012
This is amazing. Made exactly like recipe. Tastes like y'all are eating a roast. I couldn't believe how flavorful this soup is. Will make again.
01/31/2015
I tranquillity enjoyed this simply I did add a few things. I added some bay leaves and thyme. Salt and pepper. It required 2700ml beef broth and I am sure more than could have been added as information technology was still very thick. It only took two.5hours to simmer instead of iii. Overall very good and I volition exist making it again.
04/07/2015
Like shooting fish in a barrel, delicious, I used 12 cups beef broth for a more "soupy" feel. Spiced it upwards with salt, pepper, splash of tabasco, splash of worcester sauce, garlic powder and some dried thyme. Will definitely brand again.
03/07/2016
Outset, it need much more flavour seasonings. Second, considering it cooked for and then long, the barley were also soft. Adjacent time I will just sub the barley for some potatoes.....making it a traditional beef stew....
03/03/2014
I omitted the celery b/c I didn't have any on hand and I added five cloves of crushed garlic. I served it with beer bread and a salad and it was a big hit. Well worth the wait and I will brand this once more.
02/xi/2020
I made this and it was the best soup I've ever had!!! Will definitely make information technology again!! Only thing I had to change was to double the amount of beef goop. I live in a dry out climate so thats usually what I take to practise. The liquids evaporate so rapidly.
10/28/2013
Yummy & easy!!! My 2 favorite things!! Great Dominicus dinner soup with crusty bread.
01/09/2017
This is simply delicious! Hits the spot on a cold winter day. I seasoned the beef with some montreal steak seasoning while cooking. I could merely find quick cooking barley, so I added information technology with the mushrooms in the final half hr of cooking. Information technology seemed fix at this point, so I turned off the oestrus. The meat was tender and the veggies were cooked perfectly. Some other half hour would have been too much. Overall this is a practiced recipe.
03/16/2021
This was so good! I used extra beefiness goop and added a bay foliage and Worcestershire sauce as others brash. Used 4 oz of barley. Very tasty and hearty
10/01/2020
Fabulous! I did tweak recipe. Deglazed veggies with a splash of wine. Added 2 bay leaves and a teaspoon of worcestshire. Combination of stock in a box Beef & Vegetable stock. Used chuck roast whole and simmered for 3 hours. Removed meat, shredded and added back to pot. Absolutely delicious.
02/20/2020
All is groovy except that it needs salt and pepper
08/10/2018
Crawly, but needed more broth. A keeper!!
01/18/2017
Amazing soup! Great for common cold days. I've besides fabricated it for friends who are breastfeeding.
03/16/2020
We liked this ok but addicted we wanted more flavour and heat. I added about two tablespoons of hot sauce and also virtually three tablespoons or more of Braggs liquid aminos to add more flavor. I didn't measure exactly and did it to taste preference ut we constitute that nosotros really liked the additional flavour.
01/xiv/2013
excellent, nutritious meal. complete in and of itself! i used dried mushrooms & reconstituted them. i also used neck bones and another actually large, meaty bones that made the flavour of the stock incredible.
12/12/2016
Turned out yummy!! I sautéed everything in the soup pot to relieve a pan, used a little less barley which made information technology more soup-like. Cooked nearly 2 hours as other reviewers said and was good! Volition brand it again
02/12/2015
My husband loved this, my kids are mushroom haters (sigh) so had sandwiches for dinner - their loss. I fabricated this using Better Than Bouillon and olive oil. Perfect.
01/05/2017
Followed recipe as written. Information technology was pretty thick so I added a chip more broth and cooked virtually an 60 minutes less than recommended. Turned out great! Satisfying meal with a salad and some crusty bread!
05/17/2019
This recipe was actually good. The only thing I didn't understand was why sautee the veggies separately dirtying up another pan. I seasoned the stew meat with salt and pepper ( i lbs simply ) and browned in my dutch oven with a bit of canola oil. Once the meat was browned I then added the carrots, onions, celery and ii big cloves of garlic. Once the onions were translucent I so added beef broth instead of stock and let everything cook until the last 60 minutes when I put in the mushrooms, barely and some corn that I cut off the cob that was leftover in my refrigerator. I did add some extra h2o during the whole cooking process because the soup itself was getting a picayune too thick. Everyone ( fifty-fifty my picky eater ) enjoyed this recipe. Will make again
11/26/2017
Great recipe; just make sure you utilise beef stock that you lot love. Side by side time I'd like to endeavour substituting mixed vegetables for the mushrooms.
01/26/2016
I reduced the barley and added half a jalepeno. It was still too pasty as a result of the barley and I wound up adding nearly one.5 cups of additional liquid (I used mushroom stock). The flavour was ok. The half jalepeno did non add much of zing. Next time I would reduce the barley yet again and maybe add together some cayanne.
02/06/2018
Have your common salt and pepper shaker when you eat it. I did not add together any table salt or pepper to the soup when cooking it (well the partnering chef add i tspn of salt) just a couple of bay leaves. In addition, I had some dried chanterelle mushrooms I added. I'll make this over again.
06/23/2016
Equally the writer says it gets better with historic period. I was disappointed the commencement night I fabricated this, but when I had information technology the 2nd mean solar day it was delicious!
11/23/2018
This is by far, the best Mushroom Barley soup I have ever tasted. I used 2 lbs of Beefiness neck bones and 1 lb of ground beef. I made about 24 mini meatballs (which I browned) and browned the beef cervix bones also. Then proceeded to cook everything in four cups of beef broth and 4 cups of depression sodium chicken broth, added two tbsp worcestershire sauce, 4 Bay Leaves (remove before serving) and increased onions to 3 medium onions, chopped. Oh and I used the infant bella mushrooms instead of the usual white mushrooms.
09/28/2013
This was Awesome!!! Great flavor we did information technology in a crockpot information technology fabricated the beef sooo tender. Information technology was a great observe!!
02/27/2016
so and so so skillful! definitely a favourite!
01/18/2015
After reading other reviews I added the quick cooking barley with the mushrooms, a half cup of dry red wine, one tablespoon Worcester. It was a great stoop will brand again. Wonderful meal on a rainy day.
07/eighteen/2017
My family loved this dish. Neat, satisfying season. Definitely a keeper!
03/xx/2015
This was an astonishing recipe then like shooting fish in a barrel to make. I had to adjust the recipe to what I had in the kitchen so I used a i.5lb hanger steak and an ox tail instead of the 2lbs of stew meat. I besides used a tbsp of lard instead of the vegetable oil. Delish! Definitely a new family staple.
11/06/2018
Super like shooting fish in a barrel to make. I added 1 cup of Phantom Wine for a bit more flavour.
04/24/2020
I didn't follow the directions exactly simply still ended up with the all-time beef barley soup I've ever tasted! Browned the beefiness, sautéed whatever onion, carrot, and celery I had, a lot of garlic, and threw everything into an Instant Pot with fresh thyme, parsley, and bay leaf bouquet garni. Cooked for 30 minutes, removed the bouquet, added a ton of mushrooms (I used 8oz sliced cremini and 5oz sliced fresh shiitake) and cooked for 20 minutes more than. Added some chopped fresh parsley to finish. Amazing.
04/29/2018
I made this soup without the beef just because I didn't want to go back to the shop to buy beefiness. I besides doubled the recipe with the vegetables and barley because I wanted it to be less "soupy". It came out exactly similar I wanted it!! I am freezing the soup in containers for my lunches at work.
02/09/2021
Followed the recipe as given plus added some celery & about 1 tbsp Worchestershire sauce. Squeamish thick soup, very tasty.
04/18/2021
I used the ends of a roast I had sliced upward for sandwiches and didn't take whatever carrots, but information technology turned out great!!
10/09/2017
First-class! It was a little likewise thick, then I would add perhaps another cup of Beef Stock. I have leftovers in the fridge which may need more beef stock every bit well. This is delicious and I'll make it again. Maybe add more than veggies.
10/12/2016
I followed the recipe as stated and it turned out amazing. Perfect fall dish and the flavour was delish! I will definitely make this again.
02/24/2019
Served on a cold day with crusty french bread and a glass of red wine - perfect!
04/22/2015
Not bad recipe; instead of using mushrooms which I don't like in soup, I added tomatoes. I also cooked the barley separately before adding so the soup would not exist so thick.
08/24/2018
This was pretty proficient. I used i 32 oz container of beef broth and one 15 oz can every bit I only had a little over a i lb of curt ribs which I used instead of stew meat. Much meliorate season and texture IMHO. I would have given this a 3 and a half star rating if I could have every bit I found it too "beefy", if that makes any sense. I remember that using just beef goop fabricated it besides heavy tasting for me. Next fourth dimension (and there volition exist a next time) I'll try a container of craven broth and a can of beefiness for a little lighter flavour.
11/15/2012
Loved information technology. Very uncomplicated yet delicious.
10/30/2020
Super expert. Makes a lot of soup. Volition make over again. I didn't alter anything.
12/11/2015

02/24/2020
Yes, I will make information technology once again and information technology was really good.
05/21/2017
This recipe was a definite hit. Didn't alter a single thing. Fabricated it twice and will go along to do so. Thanks.
03/13/2015
We loved this... even my Mom. My husband doesn't similar celery, so I added more carrot. It did turn out like a stew, which nosotros like a lot. Definitely will be making this over & over. I belong to SparkPeople to rail diet & put the recipe in there. YUMMY!!!
03/06/2019
Delicious soup, perfect for a winter 24-hour interval. I've served information technology to guests with the pot on the table, on a trivet, along with salad and garlic staff of life. I use pre cutting stew meat but use poultry shears to cut off all fatty and gristle. Since I don't use salt, I make my ain beef broth by boiling the meat, which tenderizes it, too. For flavor, I use baby bella mushrooms, not white ones, and vidalia onions for sweet. I make enough and freeze information technology in individual plastic containers for quick meals. Yum!!
11/06/2016
Delicious, hearty, rich soup. I made information technology exactly as written with the exception I added more than of each vegetable. Huge hit!
01/sixteen/2018
This was an excellent base of operations recipe from which to starting time. I like more than seasoning in my cooking. I added Bay leaves, oregano, thyme, basil, and garlic.
12/22/2018
Needs some salt. merely Yummy.
03/sixteen/2017
its a keeper
07/06/2017
I fabricated this and added fresh spinach at the finish, sooo yummy!
01/09/2017
Even though I had no mushrooms on hand I gave information technology v stars! I did take some mushroom stock that I used with the beef stock. Very easy to make ..and y'all're right....tastes even amend the side by side day.
12/31/2014
I used high quality ribeye beef and added a tin can of tomatoes to amp this recipe upward. It was succulent!
01/07/2017
Delicious. My whole family enjoyed this (fifty-fifty my half-dozen year quondam). Nosotros had some left over and I served once again the side by side 24-hour interval, at the begging of my kids, and information technology was even meliorate afterwards sitting for a mean solar day. This volition exist skilful to make again and freeze. Next time I make information technology, I volition add whatsoever vegetable I call up volition go well in the soup (like green beans). This would work well with noodles if out of or wanting a beef noodle vegetable soup. One more ingredient I will attempt the next time I make this is adding a touch of cherry-red vino or a very small amount of sherry. Thank you for this recipe! It is dandy feeding the family a hearty, hot soup in the heart of wintertime. I am making this once again.
05/12/2014
I thought this turned out pretty proficient. I didn't have the beef stock, so I used beef burgoo instead.
04/22/2018
Tastey alternative to my vegetable beef soup. Came out very thick and filling.
12/09/2018
